The de Young museum's state-of-the-art new facility integrates art, architecture, and the natural landscape in one multi-faceted destination that will inspire audiences from around the world. Its mobile app includes general information about the museum, exhibits, events, ticket purchasing and scanning options, parking/bike storage purchasing options, fully interactive maps, and cafe menu and reservation system.
Founded in 1895 in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park, the de Young museum has been an integral part of the cultural fabric of the city and a cherished destination for millions of residents and visitors to the region for over 100 years.The de Young museum state-of-the-art new facility integrates art, architecture and the natural landscape in one multi-faceted destination that will inspire audiences from around the world.
My role was to research, test, and design for this project. I was in charge of demographics research, interview scripting and conducting, synthesizing results, creating user personas and journeys, testing, as well as complete visual design for the mobile application and supplemental materials.
Museum visitors predominantly prefer to order their tickets online and have them available on their mobile devices.
Museum visitors would love to reserve their cafe tables and be able to order their meals and drinks ahead of time.
Most of the interviewed people shop regularly at the museum stores during their visits. They look for gifts, unique merchandise, and souvenirs.
Majority of the interviewed people would consider including parking/bike storage in their admission or memberships.
Miguel is planning a day trip to visit the museum as a member. He is excited about the new special exhibit and wants to share the experience with his family.
Annya is visiting as a part of a trip across the US. She has a few hours to visit a museum and chooses De Young because she wants to see the Golden Gate Park too.

Users found the maps too small and unreadable. They wished there is a real-time navigation taking them from their location to the chosen room or exhibit.
Users wanted to see more payment options available. They also thought it would be nice to have the option to save payment information for future use.
Users found the information button to be too small and hard to understand and press. More legible and easier to tap icon was requested by the majority of the testing participants.
